Program Highlights Heart-Spells (PWC commission) by Mark Winges; Green Music (PWC commission) by Kirke Mechem; Quant j’ai ouy le tabourin by William Brown; Tango in 5 by Sandra Milliken; Famine Song by Vida, arr. Matthew Culloton.
This spring, get ready for not one, but TWO new commissions! The Peninsula Women’s Chorus casts Heart-Spells, a world premiere by San Francisco composer Mark Winges. We are also introducing to our palette Green Music by Kirke Mechem, recently premiered at the New Music for Treble Voices Festival in March.
The Latin phrase describing dance (pede terram pulso) translates as “strike the earth with the foot.” We explore this concept with tango-inspired music and a choreographed performance of Famine Song, inspired by stories of Sudanese basket weavers praying for rain. We bring forth the voices of the earth with selections by American composers Stephen Paulus, Ron Jeffers, and Brian Holmes, as well as an original composition honoring the African American spiritual tradition. Come indulge your hunger for beautiful, lush music!
Arrive before 4:00 pm for a puzzle hunt exploring our music!
