PWC Collaborates
Puccini and Wong

This spring, the Peninsula Women’s Chorus will join forces with the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus in an exciting collaboration! Together, we will perform Giacomo Puccini’s stunning Messa di Gloria, a masterpiece often regarded as his farewell to sacred music. In our solo set, the Peninsula Women’s Chorus will present the world premiere of “Night into Dawn,” the newly commissioned work written by Theresa Wong, PWC’s Composer-in-Residence and dedicated to the community of Lahaina. The program further includes a tango-inspired “Noche de Lluvia” by Canadian composer Sid Robinovich, Alice Parker’s beautiful arrangement of “How Can I Keep from Singing,” and a delightful a cappella arrangement of Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute. GGMC’s solo set will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner in a performance of his sacred motets.

Join us for an unforgettable musical event as we share the harmonious fruits of our collaborations!

  1. Noche de Lluvia

The evocative words of Uruguayan poet and feminist Juana de Ibarbourou (1892-1979, also known as Juana de America) create a scene of great sensuality inside a bedroom and outside, where the rain is tapping with “little fingers” on the windowpane. The original music is by Canadian Sid Robinovitch, the first movement of a suite called Canciones por las Americas, premiered by the National Youth Choir of Canada in 2000.

  2. Nigra Sum Michael Bussewitz-Quarm

In 2016, the United Nations identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance, of which more than 6 million were internally displaced within Syria, and over 4.8 million were refugees outside of Syria.

  4. How Can I Keep from Singing Robert Lowry
  5. Overture to The Magic Flute Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The idea for singing this overture from Mozart’s great opera came as a way to enjoy the exciting music written for orchestra in the way that only a chorus can. Because Mozart’s instrumental music is so playful and so full of human spirit, the transcription from the orchestral score has been a natural for vocal ensemble. – Henry H. Leck
